Dear College of Science Faculty, Staff and Students:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. James Kubicki will be joining the College of Science as Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences at UTEP, effective August 1, 2015.

Dr. Kubicki received his B.S. in Geology from the California State University at Fullerton, and his Ph.D. in Geochemistry from Yale University. After being trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Institute of Washington and the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Kubicki served as a National Research Council Associate and worked as a Senior Principal Engineer for the Computer Sciences Corporation. Since 1998, Dr. Kubicki has been a faculty member at The Pennsylvania State University, where he most recently held the title of Professor of Geochemistry in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute.

The teaching and mentoring experience that Dr. Kubicki brings with him is certain to enhance our programs and outcomes, and support UTEP’s mission of access and excellence. He has worked with undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in field, laboratory and classroom settings to promote learning and career preparation. In addition, he has contributed to the development of cross-institutional Centers, is engaged in collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and is committed to science education and outreach to the public.

With a strong history of extramural funding and a publication record that includes nearly 150 articles in a number of peer-reviewed and well-respected journals, Dr. Kubicki is poised to serve as an excellent mentor for researchers at all career stages. His own work is focused on molecular modeling in environmental geochemistry, with current and pending research support from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. Previous funding sources have also included the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Petroleum Research Fund. He arrives at UTEP with an active grant portfolio of more than $1M.

It is these strengths that give me confidence that Dr. Kubicki will succeed in his new role as Chair and support current and new efforts in research and education. I hope that you will join me in welcoming him to our College and University, and aid him in facilitating the continued growth and success of the Geological Sciences Department.
