Awards and Activities
1997 - Lifetime achievement award from the "Academia Mexicana de Materiales" "Por su valiosa contribución al desarrollo de la Ciencia de los Materiales en México."

1999 - UTEP - Award for outstanding achievement in developing the University Seminar Program.

2004 - UTEP – Outstanding Research Award

Research Interests
My research projects focus on both the fundamental and applied aspects of materials science as applied to petroleum catalysis, fuel cell electrodes, organic/inorganic complex materials and biofuels. The main current fundamental focus is on organic/complex materials that have led to novel catalysts and pigments. MRTI has generated start-up companies that exploit intellectual property developed by UTEP faculty and students. These start-ups (Mayan Pigments Inc., Refinery Science Inc. and Energy Farms Inc. have provided jobs and research investment for the El Paso region.
